Maidstone Monthly - Tournament Report pt 1
We did it!
We set a new record for turnout for our Monday night monthly events with thirteen players making it to the Style and Winch for the event, beating the previous best of twelve. Although our playgroup in Maidstone has grown to around twenty players it is rare we can get this many together at the same time due to work and social commitments so this increase in competitors is encouraging, especially as two of the players were playing in their first proper tournament.
THE PLAYERS:
James Warrener (Revenge Squad Ongoing PT Abuse)
Vince Newman (The New Brotherhood Reservist Style)
David Moakes (Crisis Doom)
Cameron Macgregor (Midnite Sons, Marvel Knights/Underworld)
Graham Beadle (Its OK to KO, Fatal 5/Secret Society)
Amy Chizlett (Avengers Reservist)
Tommy Gibson (Hellfire Club Curve)
Jordan Newman (Spiderfriends Curve)
Jack Rutter (Injustice Gang Handfill)
Harry Streeter (Gotham Knights)
Wayne Hepworth (Brotherhood Reservist)
Ben Waghorn (Curve Sentinels)
Tony Weston (?)
Despite the event being Golden Age, as you can see from the metagame, there were no ‘broken’ decks on display. In fact the majority of the decks were cobbled together with the available resources, rare light and containing numerous 1 ofs in the list, not necessarily by choice but by necessity. None the less, although a number of the decks on view could be considered slightly below par, competiton was no less fierce. A Vs System Superman T-Shirt was at stake along with 24 boosters so nobody was taking things lightly.
I’d brought down my ‘fun’ deck, Fatal 5/SS KO with my sights set on a 2-2 finish. The jankiness of the deck left me expecting no better so I was quite relieved to see that a couple of the players that had recently been running off-curve decks had switched to decks of the on-curve variety.
ROUND 1
Amy Chizlett bt Jack Rutter
Graham Beadle bt James Warrener
Ben Waghorn bt Vince Newman
Tommy Gibson bt Harry Streeter
David Moakes bt Tony Weston
Jordan Newman bt Wayne Hepworth
Cameron Macgregor = bye win
A good result for Jordan Newman in round 1. Despite consitently proving to be one of the most consistent Yugioh players in the area, Jordan (11) had met with little previous success at Vs, so was no doubt more than pleased with this victory, albeit over a player competing in his first proper tournament.
Round 1: Me vs James Warrener (Revenge Squad Ongoing PT Abuse).
My opening 4 cards were 2 KO cards, a team up and a 1 drop. I kept them after much deliberation and it turned out to be the right choice.
I went T1-1 drop, T2-1 drop, T3-3 drop and then proceeded to hit curve for the rest of the game. James however went T1-nothing, T2-nothing, T3-2 drop and despite hitting curve from there onwards never succeeded in getting more than 1 character on the field with all the KO PT’s I drew into. Although the game went on to turn 7 it was never close as board presence paid dividends in the end.
1-0
ROUND 2:
Jordan Newman bt Amy Chizlett
Graham Beadle bt Tommy Gibson
Ben Waghorn bt David Moakes
Tony Weston bt Cameron Macgregor
Vince Newman bt Jack Rutter
James Warrener bt Harry Streeter
Wayne Hepworth = bye win
A round of upsets, with both the Newmans, Vince and Jordan, producing unexpected victories. Tony Weston also bagged his first victory in competitive play. Ben, Jordan and myself were the unbeaten players at this stage, with Jack and Harry both winless.
Round 2: Me vs Tommy Gibson (Hellfire Club)
Although things started evenly in the game, things soon turned sour for Tommy, missed drops proving problematic. With me running 12 KO cards in the deck, Tommy, like James in the game before never managed a convincing on field presence and the game was, to be honest, a little one sided. Riddler, active through out the game was also a thorn in the side of the Club Members, shutting down PT’s on a couple of occasions and providing the exhaust for a timely Unnatural Selection on another.
2-0
Will continue this account of proceedings tomorrow.
