League of Assassins - A DCL Review

Posted in card reviews on March 23, 2008 by maidstonedemon

I’ve been so busy recently, not had the opportunity to build decks, test, let alone write Blog entries.
Fortunately for me, Gary has picked up the slack for me as co-writer on this Blogsite.
We’ve got a couple of mammoth entries from him over the next couple of days, then hopefully I’ll be back around next weekend with a weeks testing and comments in time for the Nationals on the 5th April.

Anyway here is Gary’s review of all things Ra’s related in DCL Read more »

Just Shooting a Breeze

Posted in Uncategorized on March 12, 2008 by maidstonedemon

A brief blog entry this.

First up thanks to Dave (of Pyrahmancy Blog) for sorting out my banner for the Vs System Network as well as my voting button. Most appreciated!

Secondly, our latest Youtube creation is up. Had fun doing this up at the London City Champs. Link here

Thirdly, we had our first BYOS event in Maidstone in preparation for the UK Nationals. 8 entrants, five rounds, 6 players (including myself) finishing 3-2. Good fun was had by all, I ran a Green Lantern Corps capable of going on or off curve. Didn’t have all the cards I wanted on the day, but the deck shows promise as it has search, hidden hate, resource row hate and can adapt to opponents strategy.

Computer Ineptitude Strikes Again

Posted in Uncategorized on March 8, 2008 by maidstonedemon

I’d really like to get a banner on Kamiza’s blog link site. I’d also like to pop a vote for me box on this blog.

Guess what, I don’t know how.

Any tips, or anyone feel like doing it for me?

Maidstone Monthly - Tournament Report pt 1

Posted in Tournament Reports with tags , , , on March 5, 2008 by maidstonedemon

We did it!

We set a new record for turnout for our Monday night monthly events with thirteen players making it to the Style and Winch for the event, beating the previous best of twelve. Although our playgroup in Maidstone has grown to around twenty players it is rare we can get this many together at the same time due to work and social commitments so this increase in competitors is encouraging, especially as two of the players were playing in their first proper tournament.

Five go mad in Maidstone

“With lashings and lashings of Bombadier!”

My Fatal Five deck finally gets a run out in tournament play this Monday. I’ve been sleep tuning the deck in the early hours on MWS. A few changes have been made. A few changes have been tried and discarded.

The Maidstone monthly event is the event in which I’ll be running it and it counts towards the Player of Year race, which is close. My money is still on Jack to win the POY, mainly due to the fact he’s less likely to run jank than either Amy, James or myself. Read more »

MWS under threat

Posted in Uncategorized on March 1, 2008 by maidstonedemon

Don’t panic  we’re not talking crashed servers here. We’re talking about my available time for deck testing.

We have now entered the most important time of the year, the baseball season, Spring Training is here so my sleep deprivation begins anew.

Being a UK native some of you may be surprised to know that I have attended over 300 Oakland A’s games and stay up till the early hours to watch the games via MLB.tv, normally watching about 100-120 games per season.

This year will be no different, though I’m sure you can see where this will seriously hamper my MWS time. Normally I can only get a game in the early hours of the morning, but this will clash with the game broadcasts, so my apologies go out to any opponents. I’ll be making even more sleep deprived mistakes than before.

Quintessentially Quirky - First Lady of Crime

First Lady of Crime

This is another quirky golden age deck that is once again designed to demonstrate the possibilities there are for some really very odd combinations of teams.

There are a few teams that really struggled to find a place in the competitive histories of VS. Teams like New Gods, Man-hunters and X-Statix have all missed out on their chance to shine. Another team has always hovered just outside of the competitive circuit, with an unusual play style they promised much but never quite delivered. The Crime Lords featured in the Marvel Knights set and tried to make us believe that penalising your opponent for daring to attack was a good way to secure victory. To some extent they worked, making attacking difficult through high defence pumps and redirection was something that has always been a strong play in a combat focused world. Unfortunately, the reliance on reinforcement and the inability to use formation proved too much. The lessons learnt here were put to good effect in the Team Superman re-feature in DC Worlds Finest.

But the Crime Lords should not be forgotten. If we can find away to give them consistent reinforcement and even some additional attack control then there may be a way to bring the best out in them.

There has been one character in VS that has always been synonymous with protection and reinforcement, and that is Invisible Woman. From Marvel Origins, she has been negating attacks on herself and reinforcing her family simply by being there, and over the last few sets her repertoire of sneaky tricks has just got bigger.

So I hereby present you with the new First Lady of Crime….
