Technical Ignorance

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , on February 13, 2008 by maidstonedemon

When it comes to computers, html, blogging, surfing etc I’m a bit of a noob. Despite being internet enabled for 6-7 years I’ve never really got to grips with anything other than posting in the odd forum and watching MLB.TV for my A’s fix.

So this blog entry goes out with a few questions which hopefully will allow me to make the blog entries easier on the eye and a little more polished. My writing, however, will still be of the same drab quality. Read more »

Four days and counting

Posted in Tournament Reports with tags , , on February 13, 2008 by maidstonedemon

OK…four days to go and Grodd and his colleagues got another run out at our weekly event, The Grinning Demon Invitational.
Happy with the results although really hope i can acquire the 2 sharks and 2 mantas as the deck struggled a little without them. Despite the fact that I felt the deck was lacking, secured a 3-0 performance bagging a tournament win. Read more »

Hand of Doom - Big Red Gauntlet

Another deck of workable jank from Happymoog

Big Red Gauntlet

This is another janky deck that looks to do something a bit quirky and odd to win the game.

I adored the Hellboy Essential Collection. It had great artwork, one of the better rule books I have seen, and two decks that brought something interesting to VS. A lot of starter decks have been overly simplistic decks that have also been under-powered when paired up against more traditional builds. This was not something that the H.E.C suffered from. Both decks had their own definite themes and play styles that were competitive.

I have decided to take one of those themes and see if I can combine it with possibly the most ridiculous suite of cards in VS.

The Bureau of Paranormal Research and Development are known for two things: Big Red himself, Hellboy, and the use of other-world technology to overcome their opponents. This was represented by some of the strongest equipment support in any team. So I wanted to give them so powerful toys to play with, and the best toys in town are…………… no, not the Fate Artifacts, they are for beginners! Much better than that……

The Infinity Gauntlet and its component gems! Anything that costs 10 resource points to recruit has to be good, and you are not disappointed. This is a powerful piece of kit… but nothing this good comes easy J (see earlier deck lists for why this is a good thing!) Read more »

Five days and counting

Posted in Deck Analysis with tags , , , , , on February 12, 2008 by maidstonedemon

With the ‘coverage’ of the California Mega-weekend finished we have a new look to the Silver Age meta. How will that affect things over here in Ol’ Blighty. Well, not at all really.

The Biz, and by that I mean Bizarro and not Simon Bisley, was the new top dog. However in the upcoming SA London City Champs there is a general consensus from all taking part that any one playing a ‘fate suite multiple attack’ deck, or a Bizarro abuse deck will probably receive a quick kick to the nads (thats testicles for those not in the know).

This isn’t because we aren’t competitive, nor because we build sub-standard jank, Ian Vincents Deep Green anyone? It’s just because the UK community never really had big money events, 3 x 10K’s aside. We never got the ‘must win big bucks’ mentality engraved on our psyche because we never had the option. It has always been about playing a great game with a bunch of superheroes on bits of cardboard. Read more »

Grodd Control pt1

Posted in Deck Analysis with tags on February 11, 2008 by maidstonedemon

Control: to curb, restrain: to regulate; to guide, superintend: to direct, supervise.

Over the last few weeks I’ve been running a Secret Society Grodd Control deck with a fair degree of success, posting winning records, without securing any tournament wins. The biggest problem I’ve found with the deck is it not living up to its name, Grodd Control. In a number of the matchups I’ve found my opponent dictating the way the match panned out rather than myself. So I took the deck apart last night, whilst at the same time thinking, ‘What worked’?

The answers were a little disappointing. Stealing characters on turns 4 or 5 depending on initiative was great if you’d kept there low cost characters off the board by means of unnatural selection of total anarchy. If the deck hadn’t managed this then basically it had a tendency to roll over. It had been handed a defeat against a future foes deck solely on the basis it couldn’t deal with the raw stats of the low drop characters. It had been dealt a loss at the hands of Jacks’ Marvel Defenders deck because it couldn’t handle the multiple stuns created by Nova, The Order and recruiting the 5-drop Dr.Strange, whilst Nova’s DEF was boosted by Backup effects.

The possible solutions to this were Read more »

Time, Inclination, Ideas - Results

Posted in Uncategorized on February 6, 2008 by maidstonedemon

I was going to start ths blog off with an intro along the lines of ‘Isn’t it weird that…..’. Then I got to thinking that the subject material I’m shooting a breeze about isn’t weird, its just life.

My success at Versus system normally comes when I have all three of the above in place.

The last two tournaments I have come second of eight and third of six, posting 3-1 and 2-1 records respectively. Not bad you may think, but not as good as I have come to expect. My biggest problem at the moment is that one of the three elements is missing, TIME.

As stated in my I, Demon entry I run a small comic and gaming shop along with my wife. Combine that with raising and home educating three small children, running OP for four different games (Yugi, VS, Warmachine, L5R) my free time is rare at present, which is a real shame as I have a host of nifty ideas I want to try out.

Go back two years and I had time, but no inclination. Back then the playgroup in Maidstone consisted of three people, compared to 12-14 now. Putting time and effort in to just play in an unsanctioned 3-man round robin, well you can see where I’m coming from.

The only time I had both time and inclination was when I was a novice player having only just taken up the game. The problem then was no ideas. My grasp of mechanics and card interaction was limited so my time was spent building bog standard curve decks or netdecking.

So here is my proposal. I would like to suggest a 30 hour day for all versus players who work and have kids. This is a special dispensation meted out to those players who meet both criterias just so as to level the playing field with those twenty something singletons who have hours to playtest in readiness for an event.

On a more serious note, when I do get the time will be working on a couple of new decks and posting findings on here. VU/SS, Curve VU, Something KREE, plus a comic tie-in Sinestro Corps deck.
Also will be putting up a couple of comc reviews over the next few days, well collected tpb reviews anyway.

Quintessentially Quirky - Dooms Pet G

Another delightfully janky build from Garry ’Happymoog’ Hewitt

DOOM’S PET G.

I just want to echo what Graham said in his Intro article. These decks are not tournament winning power-houses. I build quirky decks that are often easily improved, and certainly do not compare myself to the Pro players of old. These decks are designed to make you think outside the box and look to creating decks that are interesting and fun to play.

This is another one of the jank decks that shouldn’t really see the light of day. Yet there is something within a lot of VS players that makes them want to take those crazy cards that shouldn’t impact on a normal game and bring them to the table.

My personal approach to most decks I build is that if it’s not difficult to do, then it’s not worth doing. My main Elite Series decks were based around Four Freedoms Plaza (pre-Bizarro obviously) and the Dual-Loyalty Dr Doom. So getting hold of the “Galactus is Coming” set was always going to get the creative juices flowing. Now getting to turn 8 to use a ridiculous plot twist like Obliterate is a lot easier when you start on turn 4 or 5, and your opponent is only recruiting smaller guys.  In a normal game, when you start on turn 1, things get trickier. Even tougher would be the ability to use it earlier than turn 8. Sounds like fun doesn’t it J

Taking the ideas behind the old Gamma Bomb decks that looks to go off on turn 6 or 7, I decided that it was time for Dr Doom to hire some help to start blowing stuff up. Read more »

Signature Dish

Prior to owning a comic shop with my wife, I spent numerous years running pubs and pub/restaurants. As a ‘chef’ it is a pre-requisite that you have a ’signature dish’, something that sums up your outlook on food and displays your culinary skills. This doesn’t necessarily have to be your best dish, just something that is inherrently yours and no one elses. Read more »

Enthusiasm over Eloquence

Posted in Uncategorized on February 1, 2008 by maidstonedemon

The title says it all. If you intend to be a frequent visitor to the blog, you can be sure of a number of things.

1) Don’t expect to see any format breaking decks
2) Expect to see some fanboy gushing
3) Don’t expect to see weeks to go by without an entry
4) Expect a number of guest appearances by the Maidstone Crew
5) Dont expect quality writing, I’m not a great wordsmith, the title above should say it all
6) Expect to become familiar with a bunch of guys you’ve never met, Silent-J, Bear, Cheezelet, Giantkiller, The Dread DorCammu (the player formerly known as The Caminator), No Problem and the rest of the guys.
7) Expect to read comic reviews when I can’t think of anything Vs related to post.
8) Don’t expect professionally published entries with graphics and stuff. I still haven’t figured how to post images within a post rather than just at the top.
9) Expect to find links to any new releases of our Youtube show, The Lazarus Pit
10) Don’t expect to see me in any other mood than upbeat. This game makes me happy, winning or losing.
