London City Champs - Tournament Report pt 2
Round 3 - Amy Chizlett - Future Foes
Amy is a regular at the Maidstone events and my previous encounter with her Future Foes build had been less than favourable. I had struggled to deal with the size of her early drop characters, but was hoping that the addition of King Shark to the mix would help on that front.
As it turned out my deck played out beautifully, going from 1 to 6 without missing the curve, including Shark on 6. Deadshot dealt with her three drop and she missed a drop as well. Combine this with the threat of Monkey See Monkey Do, the game wasn’t particularly close at any point.
2-1
Round 4 - James Warrener - AI/GK/RS Insanity
I’ve never played with, or against, an Insanity build and to be honest I wasn’t relishing the prospect. The sheer power of the cards if they do hit the desired drops/pt’s etc is just scary, so when James fetched Beside myself on turn 2, flipping it on 3 I was scared, he made about 50% of his calls during the game, probably netting him around 6-7 extra cards. It didn’t, however help him find his drops. As per any curve deck up against Grodd Control, this can prove fatal and it was for him. A timely Monkey See on turn 5 left the board way too much in my favour and the game was in the bag. This is not a deck I’d like to play against on a regular basis though as it quite clearly has the potential to beat anyone, as James had already demonstrated on the day, being 3-0 going into this game.
3-1
Round 5 - Roy Raftery - Grodd/Doom Control
I was looking forward to this game, not because it was a good matchup, but because regardless of the result I would probably make the top 4 due to tie-breaks. I also wanted to play in the closest thing to a mirror-match that I’d get on the day. Through the early turns I held a slight advantage, and this was the case on 6 when Deatstrokes effect kicked in with me having the initiative for turn 7. Or so I thought. I hadn’t bargained on Molecule Man though. Exhausting his Doom to a Mystical Paralysis, then copying the effect with Molecule Man left Deathstoke and Mark Desmond tapped down and me floundering with regards a way of stunning his field. He was then able to swing back with MM for the win. A great turnaround play from Roy, taking him to 4-1, with me having to wait for the tiebreaks as 5 players finished 3-2. As expected though I was safe, scraping in to the top 4.
With a break in the proceedings before the top 4 playoffs and the draft side event for those not making the top 4, it was a good chance to catch up with how the other members of team Demon fared. Particularly proud of Nathan going 3-2 with a seriously low-budget version of JLA curve. He managed a win over Gary on the way so can feel suitably happy with his performance, as can James going 3-2 with his Insanity build. dave will obviously be dissapointed going 1-4, more so in fact than Holly who finished, as she predicted, with an 0-5 record. Amy and Jack both finished 2-3.
Next up, playoff reports and conclusions on the day..see you in part 3
